The Pocket Campus Project of Byron Shire, Australia

Campus location and access. The Pocket is located in Australia’s premier tourist zone that spans the state of Queensland’s Gold Coast through to New South Wales’ Tweed Valley and Byron Shire. It is 30 minutes from Coolangatta International Airport and 90 minutes from Brisbane International airport.  While set in the country it is close to all amenities being ten minutes to family friendly beaches and only 20 minutes from Australia’s spectacular, most easterly point of Cape Byron and the beachside town of Byron Bay, which is internationally renowned for its surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling and whale watching. ‘The Pocket’ is derived from the village's location between 400m high hills in the vicinity of the Nightcap National Park and on the edge of Mount Warning.

Education environment. The area has a mild, temperate climate, making it a pleasant place to be and to study all year round. This campus offers a unique setting in being easily accessible by international students and being conducive to those who wish to study in a relaxed and interesting environment that reflects Australian history and culture but is also noted for its multicultural and arts festivals, sea and surf, and creative lifestyles. The campus design will have a strong affinity with the shire’s aims to enhance rural landscapes, natural environments and biodiversity, and provide safe communities where people belong and work together for common sustainable outcomes. The local area offers a range of education facilities, including primary, a Rudolf Steiner School, secondary, and vocational education, and intensive English courses, and is within 65 km of two other universities, University of the Southern Cross, Lismore and Griffith University, Gold Coast as well as Bond Private University at Robina. This campus would offer flexibility in programs and would have the ability to design study tour packages in keeping with students’ and clients’ needs besides contributing to intensive delivery.

Advantages for Deep University

This is a convenient location on the East Coast of Australia that is well serviced and an international destination. From Coolangatta airport one can easily travel to the capital cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Launceston, Canberra and Adelaide and north to the Great Barrier Reef. The area provides a much sought after lifestyle and context for deep learning and facilitation of studies geared to the region ands surrounds as well as languages education.

Constructing The Pocket Deep University Campus

This campus has close synergies with the proposed Arena Campus, Wisconsin (U.S.) in terms of a tranquil country setting and the potential for developing a strong relationship with the land and local history, Indigenous peoples and culture. The Byron Shire Council values environmental education and is a leader in encouraging green technology and sustainability. All building constructions require a permit from the council and currently the proposed land consists of 100 acres zoned as suitable for farming and is approved for two dwellings, which can be large. Multiple occupancy is also a popular feature of the local area. Campus buildings will be architecturally designed to fit in with the natural landscape and work in with the climate and environmental needs. The land has a creek and rises to the ridgeline at the back to approximately 400 meters with rainforest and bushwalks, and views to the top of Mount Warning.

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
